The Journey of Jaymie Druding

Druding balances academics and college basketball despite injuries

Jaymie Druding’s last basketball season at Orchard Park High School became a season that could have changed her entire future.

During a game against rival Jamestown her senior season, Druding prepared to take a charge on the baseline.  An opposing post player struck Druding’s knee from one side.  Her kneecap dislocated and her medial patellofemoral ligament tore.

The injury put an end to the season for Druding, who was committed to play at the University of Maine.

“I had an amazing team that kept me motivated to what was ahead; playing on the Division I University of Maine team,” Druding said of her Quaker teammates.

When Druding delivered the news to the coach at Maine, she was very understanding and believed that Druding would have a successful comeback, according to Druding.

Druding (OP ’10) was not redshirted because Maine’s coach knew she was rehabbing daily prior to her first season at Maine and getting stronger every day.

Druding ultimately decided to leave Maine based on the fact that it was not the right fit for her.

“Division I athletics consumed every hour of your day,” said Druding, a biology major. “It was eat, sleep, breath basketball. I enjoyed it and was very lucky to have had the opportunity to play. As much as I love basketball, my dream is to be a pediatric nurse.”

The University of West Florida has an outstanding nursing curriculum and a Division II basketball program, which places more emphasis on academic success, according to Druding.

“Coming to UWF, I was reminded of why I love playing the sport of basketball so much,” said Druding, daughter of Michael and Cheryl Druding. “It was a new campus, new coaches, and new team. Yet, the one thing that remained constant was the game of basketball. It gave me an even greater appreciation for the sport.”

At the end of her junior year this past season, Druding recovered reconstructive shoulder surgery. After diving on the floor for a loose ball, she dislocated her shoulder and tore her labrum. Druding, who was third on the team in points per game (9.1) and rebounds (6.7), played through the injury.

“In our last game of regular season this year against Delta State, I threw a skip pass and threw my shoulder out,” Druding recalled. “After playing through playoffs I had to have the surgery.”

Druding’s labrum was repaired, bone spurs were shaved down, and the ball was tightened back into the socket.

“Thankfully my rotator cuffs were spared,” she said. “I look forward to making progress each time I step into physical therapy.”

Druding has an eight-month recovery time period, but plans to play basketball her senior season. Patience is key, she said.

“I am so thankful for all of the opportunities that I have had thus far,” said Druding. “What started as a hobby playing in the driveway when I was a little kid became a passion in my life that opened doors for my future. Basketball will always be my first love in life. There is nothing like putting on number 40, lacing up the Nikes, and stepping onto the court representing your school. It is an honor that I do not take for granted.”

For the third time this season, junior Sean Purtill (OPHS ’10) has been named as the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Student-Athlete of the Week in men’s lacrosse. He became the first Hilbert student-athlete to receive such an honor.

Purtill led the Hawks to a 2-0 week after recording 14 points on nine goals and five assists. The Orchard Park native was also credited with six ground balls and just one turnover. He opened the week with a game-best six goals in a 16-11 NEAC win over Cazenovia College April 17. With only three games remaining, Hilbert hosts Medaille College (4-2) on April 23 and Wells College (0-4) April 25th before they travel to SUNYIT (4-2) this weekend for their final game. Clarkson University senior Ryan Cole (OP ’09) made 13 saves in Clarkson’s 15-8 victory over Skidmore, Sunday, Sunday 14, setting the Knights’ all-time career save mark with 556 saves. Rob Meenan (1993-96) held the old mark at 547.

“I knew at the beginning of the season that I was close to the record, but I wasn’t focusing on the record,” Cole said earlier this week. “I just wanted to go out there and give our team a chance to win all of our games.”

Cole has helped the Clarkson improve from a 3-12 record his freshman season to three straight winning seasons since.

In his freshman season, Cole earned a 3-6 record in net with a 9.43 goals-against-average and 55.2 save percentage. He has improved his record and statistics every season. As a sophomore, Cole went 6-7, 8.98 GAA, 56.7 save percentage; as a junior, 9-6, 7.75, 58.7; and this season, 8-4, 7.94, 60.4.

“My freshman year we were pretty bad, to say the least, but most of the starters were freshmen and sophomores, and we were able to grow as a team every year,” said Cole. “I am just happy for the team and my classmates, because of our success this year and I couldn’t have done it without them.”

The Golden Knights (8-4) have two regular season games remaining and playoffs for Cole to strengthen the new mark.

The Orchard Park girls lacrosse team has joined the effort to support the Seton Hill women’s lacrosse team, who suffered horrific tragedy when the team’s bus veered off the Pennsylvania Turnpike and crashed into a tree, killing the team’s coach, her unborn child, and the driver.

Liz Otwell, a 2010 Orchard Park graduate and member of the Seton Hill team, was among the 23 people aboard when the bus crashed. Otwell was not severely injured in the accident.

A Facebook page, “Play 4 Seton Hill” was established to encourage lacrosse teams to wear the school’s crimson & gold colors.

“The whole Seton Hill accident was awful, and we wanted to show our support for it somehow because a former player from Orchard Park was on the team,” said Orchard Park junior Emily Balisteri. “It is very important to all of us to show that we were thinking about everyone involved and they are in our hearts.”

“It means a lot to me and our team, especially because that bus had one of our own graduated players on it,” junior Katie Dragonette said of the team’s support of Seton Hill and Otwell. “We’re glad we can support them any way we can, because we know if that ever happened to our team, people would be there supporting us as well. We’ll be supporting them every game, all season.”

Former OP lax teammates faced off

March 12, 2013 | by James Goller | College, Lacrosse | No Comments

The collegiate lacrosse matchup between Canisius College and the University at Albany, Sat., March 9, featured a battle between five Orchard Park lacrosse alumni. Canisius features four former Quakers, including players Kevin Lalley (OP ’08), Mike Moran (OP ’09), Kevin Collins (OP ’10), and assistant coach Brian Lalley (OP ’05), while Artie Marrapese (OP ’09) plays for Albany.

Albany captured a 12-11 win in a tight contest that featured a game within the game.

Canisius lead at halftime, 5-3, due in part to a great job at the face-off ‘X’ by Mike Moran, who was a top face-off specialist for the Quakers. Moran’s dominance led Albany to make a change in the second half by sending Marrapese out to take draws.

“It was fun,” Moran said after the game. “It was a nice, little surprise. I wasn’t expecting it, and when he came out in the second half, I was like ‘Here we go’.”

Moran and Marrapese helped Orchard Park advance to the New York State Class AA championship in 2009. Marrapese went to play at St. Joseph’s University while Moran played at Monroe Community College. The former high school teammates both transferred to Albany before Moran ended up at Canisius last season.

Marrapese, who had not taken a face-off this season, was prepared for the confrontation with Moran.

“I’ve been working my way up the depth charts on face-offs,” said Marrapese, who was St. Joseph’s top face-off leader his freshman season. “We have been prepping in practice. I knew all the rules. I knew what I had to do. Some of the guys were showing me techniques. We knew Moran was a stud at the X and I was prepared.”

While Moran was credited with winning 20 of 25 draws, it was Marrapese who came up with a big victory on a late draw to preserve the win for Albany.

After Canisius’ Tim Edwards scored with 30.7 seconds left in the game to pull the Griffs within a goal, Marrapese earned a much-needed draw to seal the win.
