Boys bowling improves to 4-3 mark

Jake Youngman

A 6-1 win over Williamsville North on Wednesday improved the Orchard Park boys bowling team to a mark of 4 wins and 3 losses.

Leading the way for the Quakers was freshman Jake Youngman who rolled a 570 set (223, 193, 154).

Four other Quakers threw sets of 547 or better including Ryan Kelly (563), Doug Gawel (563), Erich Nahrebeski (553) and John Sniegowski (547).

The win over the Spartans followed a 4-3 win over Lancaster on Jan. 13. It was the first time Orchard Park has defeated Lancaster in seven years.

Senior Cassie Aszkler led the Orchard Park girls bowling team to a 7-0 victory over West Seneca West on Thursday with a team-high game (244) and series (647).

Coach Cindy Connors’ A Team comprised of Aszkler, Kaitlyn Kelly, Kelsey Mitchell and Liz Szpara, and B Team of Gwen Musty, Kaitlyn Meyer, Sara Taulbee, and Danielle Ostrander defeated the Indians by over 700 pins.

Boys bowling falls to Frontier

Sophomore Doug Gawel rolled Orchard Park's highest set in seven years with a 706 at the Festival of Lights tournament.

Last season, the Orchard Park boys bowling team earned a three-way tie for the ECIC Division I title with Lancaster and Frontier. On Tuesday afternoon at Briarwood Lanes the Quakers fell to the Falcons, 7-0, to drop their season mark to 1 win and 2 losses.

Eighth-grader Hayden Brock had Orchard Park’s highest set at 585 (196, 216, 173).

The loss to Frontier came a week after the Quakers finished 12th at the Festival of Lights tournament at Thruway Lanes. It was a much improved outing than last year when the team finished in 26th place.

Sophomore Doug Gawel had sets of 706 and 650. His 706 set is the highest individual set for Orchard Park in seven years.

Meanwhile, the girls squad finished 4th at the Festival of Lights tournament. Junior Liz Szpara had the team’s highest set (594) while senior Cassie Aszkler has the highest game (230).
